Consider the symbolic significance of the title for each of this week’s readings: “Young Goodman Brown,”(405-15) “Araby,”(453-57) “and “The Story of an Hour.”(181-182) Why is the central character called “Young” and “Goodman”? Why is the boy in James Joyce’s story going to Araby? What does that name suggest? Finally, “The Story of an Hour” takes about ten minutes to read but the length of the events lasts one hour; why do you think the author placed emphasis on the length of time by entitling it in this way?

TOPIC: Select one of the following three stories – “Young Goodman Brown,”(405-15) “Araby,”(453-57) or “The Story of an Hour”(181-82) – and in a five-paragraph essay (800-1,000 words minimum) discuss how the author uses allegory to convey his/her central message (hint: Be sure to identify and define allegory in the introduction to your paper and to stay focused on this definition throughout your essay, using textual evidence to support all claims). Consult your text for a discussion of allegory. If you use quotes about allegory from the text, put in parentheses after the quote the editor’s last name and page number. For all quotes from the story, on the other hand, only the page number is needed in parentheses.
